What Goes Into a DuraTrack Sprocket Segment

The segment teeth carry the full drive of the dozer into the chain bushings, under push, rip and turn loads. Material, hardness and fit decide how long that lasts.

Three or five tooth sectionsBolt on in sections, so one worn section is replaced without removing the track.
Pitch matched to the chainThe segment pitch has to match the chain, or the bushings will not seat in the teeth.

Every segment is matched to the make, model and serial number against our product reference guide. Parts are not interchangeable between models, or often between serial number ranges of the same model.

Segments or a one-piece sprocket?
A one-piece sprocket is changed as a single unit. Segments bolt on in sections of three or five teeth, so an individual segment can be replaced without taking the track off, which makes it a far quicker job. Which type your machine takes is confirmed against the make, model and serial number before we quote.
What do I need to identify my sprocket segments?
Machine make, model and serial number; the number of teeth and bolt holes on each segment; any markings cast into the segment; and whether the machine is on a standard undercarriage or a proprietary system such as Cat SystemOne or Komatsu PLUS. The segment and pitch are confirmed against the product reference guide before we quote.
Do I need new segment bolts?
Yes, and to the right grade. Segment bolts, track bolts and split master bolts are grade 12.9; sprocket bolts and roller bolts are grade 10.9. All are forged from alloy steel and heat treated to OEM specification, in metric and imperial.

When Do Sprocket Segments Need Replacing?

A sprocket segment cannot be measured against its own original tooth profile, because that is the part that has worn away. Compare it with an unused segment of the same type: lay the new profile against the old and the loss is clear. Replace or re-rim once the wear line reaches its limit.

  • Teeth that have hooked over, so the tooth is no longer symmetrical
  • Teeth that have gone sharp or pointed at the tip
  • The chain slipping or jumping the segments under load, which shock loads the final drive
  • Flat spots or heavy external wear on the chain bushings where the segment teeth run
  • Material packing between the teeth, which stops the bushings seating and speeds up wear

Segment wear increases in reverse and in higher gears, so keep reversing and non-productive high speed travel to a minimum. Wide shoes increase bushing and sprocket wear: use the narrowest shoe that still gives adequate flotation, and keep the track correctly tensioned.

Segments and chain wear as a pair. New segments on a stretched chain wear early, and a new chain on worn segments wears faster, so measure both before changing either.

Dozer Sprocket Segment Questions, Answered

What is a dozer sprocket segment?
A sprocket segment is a bolt-on section of the drive sprocket on a crawler dozer, supplied in sections of three or five teeth. DuraTrack segments are forged and through hardened for extended wear life, with tooth profiles induction hardened to over 50RC.
Which dozer makes and models do you cover?
DuraTrack segments are listed for more than 350 crawler dozer and tracked loader models, including CAT D1 to D11 and the 953 and 963 track loaders, Komatsu D40 to D375, John Deere 700 to 950, Liebherr PR716 to PR764 and Case 550 to 1850, with Shantui, Dressta and New Holland covered too. Send the make, model and serial number and we confirm the correct segment against our product reference guide.
How do I know when sprocket segments are worn?
Compare the segment with an unused one of the same type, because the original tooth profile is the part that has worn away. Teeth that have hooked over or gone sharp, and a chain that slips or jumps the segments under load, mean the segment is at or past its limit. Sharp and worn segments shock load the final drive, so replace or re-rim once the wear line reaches its limit.
Should I change the segments and the chain together?
It depends on what the measurements say. New segments on a stretched chain wear early, and a new chain on worn segments wears faster, so parts that run against each other are usually best changed together. On dozer undercarriage a half kit is the track groups, sprocket segments and segment hardware, so the chain and segments start from the same point.
What bolts do dozer sprocket segments use?
Segment bolts are grade 12.9, the same grade as track bolts and split master bolts. They are forged from alloy steel and heat treated to OEM specification, in metric and imperial, and held in stock alongside the segments.
What warranty comes with dozer sprocket segments?
DuraTrack dozer sprocket segments carry a 3 year, 3,000 hour warranty, whichever comes first, matching the OEM warranty period. It is a direct replacement warranty, not a pro rata assurance.
How quickly can you deliver dozer sprocket segments?
Stocked segments are held across eight stocking locations, with the segment bolts to go with them.
