Excavator Drive Sprockets
The sprocket is the driven part of the undercarriage. It bolts to the final drive, and its teeth engage the links in the track, rubber or steel, to turn drive into travel. When the teeth wear, the link stops seating properly and can slip or jump through the sprocket, which shock loads the final drive motor.
Astrak supplies DuraTrack drive sprockets, bolt-on sprocket segments and mini sprockets for machines from 1 to 50 tonnes, manufactured from cast steel with the external tooth rim deep induction hardened to more than 50RC, all to OEM specification in ISO 9001 approved facilities.

How to Specify a Sprocket
Three dimensions decide a sprocket and none of them can be substituted. Get any one of them wrong and the sprocket either will not bolt on or will not mesh with the track.

| Pitch | The distance between the centres of the links the teeth engage. | It has to match the track. A 101mm pitch sprocket fits 101mm pitch tracks, or 52.5mm pitch tracks. |

Do I need new sprocket bolts?
When Does a Sprocket Need Replacing?
A sprocket cannot be measured against its own original toothing, because the profile you are trying to compare it with is the part that has worn away. Compare it instead with an unused sprocket of the same type: lay the new profile against the old and the loss is obvious. Replace or re-rim once the wear line reaches its limit.
- Teeth that have hooked over, so the tooth is no longer symmetrical
- Teeth that have gone sharp or pointed at the tip
- The link slipping or jumping through the sprocket under load, which shock loads the final drive motor
- A chain that has stretched, which climbs the teeth and accelerates the wear that is already there
Sprocket wear increases in reverse and in the higher travel gears, so operating habits matter as much as the component. Digging over the sprockets rather than the idlers increases bush wear and can crack pins and bushes, and it puts the drive end under load it was not designed to take. Always dig over your idlers.
The other half of the answer is not to fit a new sprocket to a worn chain, or a new chain to a worn sprocket. Parts that mesh with each other set each other's wear rate, so our free undercarriage inspection measures both before anything is quoted.
