DuraTrack Undercarriage

Excavator & Dozer Undercarriage Parts

The DuraTrack range comprises crawler undercarriage components manufactured in OEM production facilities to rigorous OEM standards. All DuraTrack products are fully tested and inspected to ensure correct fitment, durability, consistent quality and assured performance.

The range covers tracked machines from 0.8 to 80 tonnes: track chains and assembled track groups, track shoes, sprockets and segments, bottom and top rollers, idlers, track adjusters and hardware. The undercarriage wears as one system, so a free inspection measures every component before we quote.

  • One of the largest undercarriage stock holdings in Europe
  • Single components, half kits, full kits or a complete undercarriage
  • Free undercarriage inspection with a measured wear report
  • Next-working-day UK delivery from stock

Undercarriage Wear and Inspection

Each wearing component sets the wear rate of the components it runs against. A worn sprocket shortens the life of a new chain, and one new roller among worn ones wears faster than the set it replaced. Four measurements determine most replacements: chain stretch, rail height, grouser height, and roller and idler tread wear.

  • Chain stretch. Measured across four or five pin centres against the new specification. On a 50 link chain, 1mm of pin wear plus 1mm of bush wear adds around 100mm to the overall length.
  • Sprocket wear. Compared against an unused sprocket of the same type. Sharp or hooked teeth let the chain jump, which shock loads the final drive.
  • Rollers. Change all bottom rollers together. One new roller among worn ones stands proud and carries more than its share of the load.
  • Shoe width. Use the narrowest shoe that still gives adequate flotation. Excess width accelerates bush, sprocket, link and roller wear and loosens hardware.

Four operating habits extend undercarriage life: dig over the idlers rather than the sprockets, keep the track correctly adjusted, keep the undercarriage clear of packed material, and reverse as little as the job allows. Excavator chains are designed to wear less travelling forwards.

What we need to identify your undercarriage
Make, model and serial number; number of track rollers and carrier rollers; number of links in the chain; number of grousers on the shoe; track shoe width in mm; and any markings cast into the links, rollers, idlers or sprockets. Parts are not interchangeable between models, or often between serial number ranges of the same model, so the more of this you can send, the faster the quote comes back.
How to measure grouser height
Clean two grousers and the pad surface between them. Lay a ruler across the top of the two grousers over the middle of the shoe, not the ends, which carry extra wear. Measure from the ruler down to the base of the pad with a second ruler or, preferably, a vernier. That figure gives the wear percentage of the shoe and grouser bars.

Undercarriage Questions, Answered

What parts make up an excavator undercarriage?
The wearing parts are the track chain, the track shoes bolted to it, the sprocket that drives it, the idler that guides and tensions it at the front, the bottom rollers that carry the machine's weight, the top rollers that support the top run of track, the track adjuster that keeps tension, and the bolts and nuts that hold it all together. Track guides are fitted on some machines to stop the chain moving sideways.
Should I replace the whole undercarriage or just the worn part?
It depends on what the measurements say. A new chain fitted to worn sprockets wears faster, and a single new roller among worn ones wears faster than the set it replaced, so parts that touch each other are usually best changed together. Where only one component is at its limit, that component can be replaced on its own. The inspection report confirms which parts are due.
Half kit, full kit or single parts?
If more than one component is close to its wear limit, a kit means the components wear uniformly from the same starting point and the machine comes off the job once rather than repeatedly. On dozer undercarriage a half kit is the track groups, sprockets and sprocket hardware; a full kit adds the idlers, top rollers and bottom rollers with their hardware. Send the inspection measurements and we will confirm which parts are due.
Why does my machine keep throwing a track?
Detracking is normally a symptom rather than a fault in the track itself. The usual causes are a loss of tension from a failed track adjuster, worn sprockets, rollers or idlers, material packed in the undercarriage, the wrong pitch fitted, and working habits such as consistently turning in one direction or running across a side slope. Track guards help where the chain is moving sideways.
What warranty comes with undercarriage parts?
DuraTrack dozer undercarriage, SALT chains and conversion kits carry a 3 year, 3,000 hour warranty, whichever comes first, matching the OEM warranty period. Excavator track chains carry an 18 month warranty. Track adjusters carry 12 months when purchased and fitted with a new idler, and 6 months without, because a worn idler can cause a new adjuster to fail early. Conversion kit fitting labour carries a separate 12 month warranty.
Can you fit undercarriage on site?
Yes. Astrak uses a nationwide network of approved plant fitters, so fitting is carried out at your depot or on site anywhere in the UK and the machine does not have to travel. A full undercarriage swap can be done in one to two days. Workshop rebuilds are handled from our own facilities.
How quickly can you deliver undercarriage parts?
Place your order before 4:30pm and it will be despatched for delivery on the next working day. Astrak holds one of the largest undercarriage stock holdings in Europe across eight stocking locations, and delivery reliability runs at 95% on time in full.
Do you supply mini excavator undercarriage?
Yes. The DuraTrack mini undercarriage range covers rollers, idlers and sprockets, and steel and rubber tracks, for mini excavators from 0.8 to 9 tonnes. Rubber tracks are supplied in widths from 180mm to 800mm, including non-marking tracks for work on finished surfaces.
