The warranty depends on correct fitting: incorrect piping will result in non-warranty failure, which is why fitting instructions are supplied with the drive.
What we need to identify your drive
The machine type, model and serial number, whether the existing drive is single speed, and a clear photograph of the tag plate on the motor side of the drive. Where the tag is missing we work from the check sheet.
Single speed or two speed?
All of our drives are two speed. On a single-speed machine the second-speed port is simply not used: a hose is fitted from the free drain port to the second-speed port so that pressure cannot build up.
Final drive, travel motor or track motor?
The same part. Parts books and suppliers call it a final drive, a travel motor or a track motor. Whichever term you use, the make, model and serial number identify it.

The tag plate does most of the work. Send what you can and we confirm the rest before quoting.

Fitting a Replacement Final Drive

A new drive fitted into a contaminated system will not last. When a final drive fails, metal particles do not stay in the drive: they pass into the hydraulic circuit. Before installation, make sure the hydraulic oil is not contaminated with metal from the previous drive's breakdown. We strongly recommend a complete change of hydraulic oil and a new hydraulic filter when a final drive is changed.

  • Clean all dirt from the installation area, particularly around the hoses. Ingress of dirt will cause early failure.
  • The ports are colour coded on the fitting instructions: blue for the drain ports, red for the second-speed port, green for the two main feed hoses. The main feeds are the two thickest hoses, and swapping them reverses the direction of travel.
  • The second-speed port is one fixed size. Use the fitting supplied, and do not exchange the valve.
  • Not sure which thin hose is the drain and which is second speed? With both in a bucket and the mains connected, run the engine at minimum speed and select second speed. The hose that squirts oil is the second-speed hose.
  • After fitting, check the gear oil level and top up with SAE 85W/90 or standard gear oil. Run the machine forwards and backwards at minimum revs, then check the circuit pressure with a gauge against the machine manufacturer's specification.

Incorrect piping will result in non-warranty failure. If anything on the instructions is unclear, call before connecting a hose, not after.

Is the Final Drive Actually the Fault?

Several cheap faults mimic a failed final drive. Rule them out before condemning the unit.

Sharp and worn sprocket teeth let the link slip or jump through the sprocket, and that shock loads the final drive motor. A new drive behind a worn sprocket is a short-lived repair, so check the sprocket first and change both where both are at their limit.

What is a final drive on an excavator?
The final drive is the hydraulic motor and reduction gearbox at the drive end of each track. The sprocket bolts to it, and as the drive turns, the sprocket teeth engage the links in the track to move the machine. It is also called the travel motor or track motor. It is the same part.

How do I identify which final drive I need?
Send the machine type, model and serial number, whether the existing drive is single speed, and a clear photograph of the tag plate. Do I need to change the hydraulic oil when I replace a final drive?
Yes. When a final drive fails, metal particles pass into the hydraulic circuit and will damage the replacement. We strongly recommend a complete change of hydraulic oil and a new hydraulic filter when a final drive is changed, and cleaning all dirt away from the installation area, particularly around the hoses, because ingress of dirt will cause early failure.
What oil goes in a final drive?
Top up the gearbox with SAE 85W/90 or standard gear oil. Check the level after fitting and before the machine goes back to work. Change intervals are machine specific, so follow the operator's manual, and look at what comes out when you drain it: brass or bronze shavings are not normal wear debris.
What are the signs of a failing final drive?
Grinding or growling, clicking or knocking that is worst on a turn, oil behind the sprocket, brass or bronze in the gear oil, loss of travel power, and a machine that pulls to one side. Rule out the cheap causes first: loose sprocket bolts, over-tight tracks, worn rollers and idlers, and low hydraulic pressure or flow. A high-pitched whine is more often hydraulic than gear train.
Can a worn sprocket damage a final drive?
Yes. Sharp and worn sprockets let the link slip or jump through the teeth, and that shock loads the final drive motor. If the sprocket is hooked or pointed, change it with the drive rather than fitting a new drive behind it.
