Excavator Track Adjusters
The track adjuster, also called the track tensioner or recoil spring assembly, sits in the undercarriage frame between the bulkhead and the idler. Its job is to keep the track correctly tensioned, and by doing so it protects the wider undercarriage from accelerated wear and damage.

How to Identify a Track Adjuster

Signs the Track Adjuster Has Failed
Most track adjuster failures show up in the track itself before anyone looks at the assembly. Three patterns account for nearly all of them.
- A track that looks far too tight, and cannot be slackened by releasing the grease valve: the rod holding the spring has broken and the assembly is over-tensioned.
- A track that will not hold its tension however much grease is pumped in: the piston seals have failed.
- A chain that jumps on the sprocket: a broken recoil spring is one of the causes, alongside worn sprockets and rollers, offset sprockets fitted wrongly and the wrong pitch.
A cracked spring is often only found when the idler comes off, and a cracked yoke follows heavy impact. Both are reasons to check the adjuster whenever the idler is being changed: it is far easier to replace the adjuster while the idler is out, and a worn idler can cause a new adjuster to fail early.
An over-tensioned track loads every mating component, so an adjuster left in that state costs more than the adjuster. Our free undercarriage inspection measures the whole undercarriage and reports on the adjuster alongside the idlers, rollers, chain and sprockets.

The adjuster yoke bolts to the idler, and a worn idler can cause a new adjuster to fail early. Changing both together carries the 12 month warranty and takes the machine off the job once.
