Delivery & Returns

The DuraTrack Track Chain Range

Three track chain types that cover almost every tracked machine on site, from a 3 tonne mini excavator on welded groups to 80 tonne quarry plant.

Greased and sealed DuraTrack excavator track chain

Greased Excavator Chains

140mm to 260mm pitch

Grease filled and sealed. Polyurethane seals keep abrasive material out of the pin and bush, so the joint wears slowly and runs quietly. Greased chains typically last 20-30% longer than a dry track chain.

DuraTrack SALT sealed and lubricated dozer track chain

SALT Dozer Chains

Sealed And Lubricated Track

Oil filled, for dozers and heavy tracked plant. The oil cuts internal friction between pin and bushing, extending internal bushing life by up to 50% compared to greased and sealed chains.

Assembled Track Groups

Chain and shoes, built to order

All 101.6mm pitch chains come as track groups with the shoes welded on. Above that, groups are built to your own chain and track shoe configuration.

No greased chain is made at 135mm pitch or below by any manufacturer. From 140mm pitch upwards, every Astrak chain is greased.

Easy fit or press fit master pin?
An easy fit master pin needs no specialist equipment to split or join the chain, so the job is safer and quicker on site. It is fitted to every DuraTrack chain as standard. A press fit pin is a tighter fit, matching the rest of the track pins, and requires a Track Press to fit the chain.
Rail and pin hardness
Rails are heat treated boron steel hardened to 48-56RC, up to 10mm deep on excavator chains and up to 13mm deep on SALT dozer chains. All pins and bushes are hardened to 55-60RC. Heavy-duty chains with a higher rail and larger bushes are available for some models.
Which way round the links go
Each link has a narrow side and a wide side. The wide side goes to the sprocket and the narrow side to the idler wheel, so when the machine travels forwards the wide side of the link hits the ground first.

When Does a Track Chain Need Replacing?

Internal pin and bush wear shows itself as chain stretch. Measure pin centres across four or five links against the new chain specification: on a 50 link chain, 1mm of pin wear plus 1mm of bush enlargement adds around 100mm to the overall length.

  • Stiff joints, or links that no longer articulate freely
  • Flat spots on the bush, a sign of an extremely worn chain
  • Excessive side rail wear or gouged rail corners, usually a shoe that is too wide or tension that is too tight
  • Bushing counterbore or pin boss deformation, worn pin ends, loose pins
  • The chain jumping the sprocket: worn sprockets, a broken track adjuster spring, worn track rollers or the wrong pitch

To get more life from the chain you have: the narrowest shoe that still gives adequate flotation, digging over the idlers rather than the sprockets, correct track tension, a clean undercarriage and as little reversing as possible. Excavator chains are designed to wear less travelling forwards.

Track Chain Questions, Answered

How long does an excavator track chain last?
Wear life depends on the ground, the machine and how it is worked, so there is no single honest figure. What is measurable is the difference between chain types: a greased chain typically lasts 20-30% longer than a dry chain, and a SALT chain extends internal bushing life by up to 50% compared to a greased and sealed chain. Regular inspection and correct track tension will do more for wear life than any published hour figure.
What is the difference between a greased chain and a dry chain?
On a greased chain, grease is sealed inside the bushing so that it surrounds the pin. That removes the metal on metal internal wear which causes chain stretch. A dry chain has no grease, so it wears internally, stretches, and can rust and seize. Seized chains fuse together and become useless, a common failure on crushers and screeners. No manufacturer makes a greased chain at 135mm pitch or below.
What is a SALT chain?
SALT stands for Sealed And Lubricated Track: heavy-duty oil filled chains for dozers and heavy tracked plant. The oil reduces internal friction between the pin and the bushing, which extends wear life. The design uses cross-drilled pins with oil passages, machined oil reservoirs, polished and stepped bushings, and a rigid seal made up of a flexible load ring, a rigid seal ring and a thrust ring.
Which chain pitch do I need?
Pitch is the distance between pin centres, and the range runs from 101mm to 260mm. Use the table above as a starting point, then confirm it: send the machine make, model and serial number with the number of links in the chain, the number of grousers on the shoe and the track shoe width. We check that against our product reference guide before quoting.
Should I choose an easy fit or a press fit master pin?
An easy fit master pin needs no specialist equipment to split or join the chain, so the job is safer and faster on site, and it is fitted to every DuraTrack chain as standard. A press fit pin is a tighter fit, matching the rest of the track pins, and is available on 171mm and 190mm pitch chains.
Do you supply dozer track chains?
Yes. DuraTrack SALT chains cover dozers and heavy tracked plant, with a 3 year, 3,000 hour warranty, whichever comes first. We also supply full conversion kits to move a machine from a CAT SystemOne or Komatsu System Plus undercarriage onto DuraTrack SALT chains, with a 12 month labour warranty when we carry out the fitting.
Can you supply a fully assembled track group rather than a bare chain?
Yes. Groups are assembled to your chain and track shoe configuration in our own workshop. In the UK we also run an exchange track group service: exchange groups are held in stock at all times, so a set can be delivered to site and the worn set collected afterwards.
What warranty comes with a track chain?
Excavator track chains carry an 18 month warranty. DuraTrack SALT dozer chains, undercarriage components and conversion kits carry a 3 year, 3,000 hour warranty, whichever comes first, matching the OEM warranty period. Conversion kit fitting labour carries a separate 12 month warranty.
How quickly can you deliver a track chain?
Place your order prior to 4.30pm and it will be despatched for delivery on the next working day. Across the business, delivery reliability runs at 98% on time in full, with stock held across eight locations in Europe.
Do you supply chains for machines over 50 tonnes?
Yes. The range extends to 80 tonnes, with pitches up to 260mm. For anything at the top of that range, talk to the team first so we can confirm availability against current stock before you plan the changeout.
